Awards
Each year Maryland TESOL offers its membership the
chance to win an award. Previous years have shown that many of you think
that you do not have the chance to win. We know that anyone who applies
has a good chance to win. You will definitely not win if you do not apply,
therefore consider nominating a deserving colleague for an award as well
as applying for money to get that professional project finally finished.
1.
Lifetime Achievement Award
Congratulations
to
Dorothea Thorne
Lifetime Achievement Award 2006 Recipient |
| DOROTHEA THORNE
Dorothea Thorne has taught ESL in Maryland for the
past 24 years. Before that she taught English for several years
in Nepal. She has also gone abroad as a volunteer trainer, working
with ESL teachers in China, Lithuania and Republic of Georgia. She
researched these opportunities to volunteer abroad and encouraged
other members of Maryland TESOL to join her in these ventures. She
also trained visiting English teachers from Egypt at U.M.B.C. and
did teacher training in the graduate program at College of Notre
Dame of Maryland.
Dorothea has been an active member of Maryland TESOL, formerly BATESOL,
since its beginning, and has arranged for every annual business
meeting dinner held at College of Notre Dame. She has presented
at a number of TESOL conferences. Dorothea has worked quietly behind
the scenes on numerous TESOL projects, never seeking the limelight
but always offering her wise guidance and assistance.
Dorothea has taught ESL at Baltimore Hebrew University, U.M.B.C.,
College of Notre Dame of Maryland, and Johns Hopkins University.
She goes well beyond the weekday teaching of an ESL professional,
hosting students in her home, taking them on weekend hikes, annual
pancake breakfasts, and tubing adventures on the Gunpowder River.
But perhaps more significant is the labor of love that is evident
in Dorothea's lengthy responses to her students' journal entries,
often helping them through personal difficulties such as homesickness.
She cares deeply about each student and offers support when it's
most needed.
For her dedication to her students, her voluntary teacher training
abroad, her substantial contributions to the field of ESL locally
and internationally, and her contributions to Maryland TESOL, Dorothea
Thorne is awarded the 2006 Maryland TESOL Lifetime Achievement Award.
