Professional Development Award

Congratulations to
Elizabeth Wagenheim
Professional Development Award 2007 Recipient

Elizabeth will be conducting a research project entitled Learning from the Voices of Exited ESL Students at the Community College Level . The objective of the project is to allow former ESL students at Prince Georges Community College to voice their perspective and experiences after completion of English 101. The data collected will be analyzed as a formative evaluation tool. The students’ feedback will be used to propose program and curricular changes to the ESL program. Externally, the results may be generalized and inform other pre-academic college ESL programs in the state. The project has larger application to the field of TESOL in Maryland. Other colleges can adapt and replicate the process.

Elizabeth writes, “Students often disappear after completion of ESL coursework, and as instructors, we have to have faith that the work that we’re doing is making a contribution to their success. If funded, this project would allow me to provide students with a forum to teach us what they need.”

Elizabeth will present the study design and resulting report at Maryland TESOL and in an article for the MD TESOL newsletter

Ann Beusch Distinguished Service Award 2004 Recipients

Steve Gershman, Jody Waltrup, Richard Schreibstein, and Adam Zimmerman

One of MDTESOL’s major goals for the 2006/2007 year has been to clarify our financial, tax and legal status. We wanted to make sure our organization knew its status, planned its budget with forethought, and had the resources we needed to go forward. We have written some long- and short-term goals for the organization, consulted accountants, filed tax returns, researched our status and are now officially incorporated. These efforts were spearheaded by our outgoing President, Janet Schreibstein, and our organization owes a debt of gratitude to her for her untiring work to see this project through. It is also an honor to recognize the following individuals who donated their time and skills to this work. MDTESOL would like to recognize the following recipients of the Ann Beusch Award. Steve Gershman, expert accountant and principal of the accounting firm of Katz, Abosch, Windesheim, Gershman & Freedman, P.A., for his generous donation of time and financial expertise. Jody Waltrup, associate and non-profit specialist at the accounting firm of Katz, Abosch, Windesheim, Gershman & Freedman, P.A., for her donation of time, research and financial expertise to our organization. Richard Schreibstein, Esquire and his associate, Adam Zimmerman, Esquire, of the law firm of Schreibstein and Hirsch, LLC for their generous donation of time and legal expertise in preparing Maryland TESOL’s legal incorporation.
