Maryland TESOL Contest for English Language Learners
Theme: Good People Who Change Our Lives

This contest was sponsored in memory of a good person who changed our lives and many others, Beth Stiefel-ltoh.

Guidelines for Students

Category I: Visual Arts

Students design their own poster using this year's theme: Good People Who Change Our Lives.

Specifications:
1. Illustrations should be created/drawn on an 81/2 by 11 inch piece of plain white paper.
2. The theme must be clearly stated somewhere in or near the illustration.
3. All illustrations must have flat surfaces. Do not use glue or any type of adhesive.
4. No three-dimensional illustrations will be considered.
5. Illustrations can be in color or black and white.
6. Illustrations may not display copyrighted figures (i.e. Garfield, Snoopy, Mickey Mouse).
7. Illustrations will be evaluated using the following criteria: Adherence to specifications, Theme relevance, Visual impact, Neatness, spelling accuracy, Originality

Category II: Poetry

Students create their own original poem of any literary format, using this year's theme: Good People Who Change Our Lives.

Specifications:
1. The poem must be submitted on an 81/2 by 11 inch plain piece of white paper not to exceed one side of one page.
2. The theme must be clearly reflected in the text of the poem.
3. Poems will be evaluated using the following criteria: Adherence to specifications, Theme relevance, Literary impact, Neatness, spelling accuracy, Originality (free of plagiarism).

Guidelines for Teachers

1. Students must be English Language Learners currently enrolled in an ESOL program at the elementary, middle, high, or post-secondary school level.
2. Schools are limited to five entries per category: K-8 schools may submit up to 10 entries.
3. Sponsoring teachers must be current members of MD TESOL.
4. Each entry must include the following information printed or typed on the back:

  • Student's name, grade, home language, country of origin, and ESOL level (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced)
  • School name, school system or program name, school address, school phone number.
  • Teacher's first and last name, and contact information (phone number and/or email)

5. One winner will be selected from elementary, middle, high school, and post-secondary school levels in each category. In addition, there will be an overall winner selected.
6. The first place winner in each category will receive a gift certificate for $50. The overall winner will receive a gift certificate for $100. The sponsoring teacher of the overall winner will receive a free one-year membership renewal to MD TESOL.
7. Entries become the property of MD TESOL and can be used by MD TESOL as they deem appropriate. Entries cannot be returned.
8. Winners will be contacted and invited to a special event in the spring.
