The 3rd annual Graduate Student's Mini-Conference is scheduled for April
10th this year. This is a wonderful opportunity to share what you have
been working on in your classes or in your classrooms with your fellow
students and program graduates. If you do not plan to present at the
conference but would like to hear about what people connected with our
program and other programs are doing, this is a good opportunity.
In either case, please save the day, Saturday, April 10, and come to the
MDTESOL-UMBC Graduate Student Conference.
Regards,

On February 28th, 2009, Maryland TESOL Graduate Student IS held their second annual Graduate Mini-Conference at the University of Maryland,
Baltimore County (UMBC). This year’s mini conference doubled in size from the previous event with 54 participants and 11 presentations offered
from 9-12:00. Representing 4 different universities (College Park, American University, Old Dominion and UMBC) as well as Washington D.C.
public schools, presenters shared their research on such topics as teaching methods, action research, acculturation, and teacher-preparedness.
It was an exciting event with excellent opportunities for networking, research collaboration and collegial support!
2008 Events
The 2008 Spring Dinner was held at Notre Dame on Thursday, May 15. We
enjoyed a lovely meal, lively conversation and an efficient business meeting.
A BIG thanks goes out to Ruby Costea and Dorothea Thorne for organizing
the event.
Reaching out to graduate students in different ESL teacher preparation
graduate programs, MDTESOL hosted a mini-conference dedicated to graduate
students to present their successful projects, research, and teaching
philosophy. On April 19th, 2008, the Graduate Students Interest Section
had our 1st Annual Spring Event. Twenty five people came together to listen
to 6 presentations. The topics included peer reviewing, educational technology,
linguistics, Daily Rap, and AAVE. The poster introduced a new career opportunity
for ESOL graduate students.
The event took place in the English Language Center at University of
Maryland Baltimore County. Faculty members attended the sessions to provide
academic, sufficient feedback to presenters.
We are looking forward to next year’s conference.
