The Higher Education group will be meeting on March 15, 2008 at Towson

the treats! The treats are examples of activities that you have done in
your classrooms that not only are very engaging and motivating, but also
meet course learning objectives. Please think about creating a Poster
of a favorite activity to share your ideas with others. We would like
to make the meeting a social event, but also ensure that you walk away
with several great new lesson plans.

Secondary Education
Saturday, March 1st
Howard Community College – Gateway Campus
10am – 12pm
Please join Secondary ESOL teachers from around the state for an exciting
presentation on Making Academic Vocabulary Accessible to ELLs. Light refreshments
will be provided.
Making Academic Vocabulary Accessible to ELLs. JoAnne Zoller
Wagner, Kristine Walker, Leigh Fleckenstein, and Susan Chung developed
an in-service presentation on vocabulary teaching for secondary and elementary
classroom teachers. The in-service includes an original Powerpoint presentation
about teaching vocabulary to ELLs, a demonstration of several ways to
teach vocabulary which includes ELLs, followed by small group brainstorming
by the classroom teachers on specific vocabulary terms. JoAnne, Kristine,
and Leigh presented this on October 19 at Severna Park Middle School and
received very positive feedback. They will describe the process of
creating the presentation, as well as the presentation, to secondary ESOL
teachers who may want to develop their own in-service presentations.
